Facets of AI, ML and NLP
- by R. Dasgupta
These are the buzz words of today’s generation – regularly used, but often not fully understood – either the exact meaning or the implications. In our first blog I shall try to explain these terms in common language, and explain how they are impacting our everyday life, in practically every aspect.
Man has long dreamt of creating machines which possess the intelligence to reason and simulate human behavior.
In Greek mythology, Talos was a giant constructed of bronze acting as guardian for the island of Crete. Czech mythology talks of Golem, a clay model endowed with life to protect a city. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is another story of a man-made monster.
Artificial intelligence is based on the assumption that the human thought and reasoning process can be formalized and mechanized. It is however, only recently that the ideas of simulating intelligence have been formalized with a real intent for practical use
- Artificial Intelligence
- A technology which enables a machine to simulate human behavior.
- Is concerned about maximizing the chances of success.
- Includes learning, reasoning, and self-correction
- Machine Learning
- A subset of AI which allows a machine to automatically learn from past data without the need for programming explicitly.
- Is works on principles of establishing patterns and classification to build rules
- Includes learning and self-correction when introduced with new data
- Natural Language Processing
- The subset of AI which gives computers the ability to understand text and spoken words similar to the way human beings do.
- NLP combines rule-based modelling of human language with statistical methods and machine learning
- Processes human language – either voice or text – to understand the meaning, intent and sentiment.
Artificial Intelligence applications have changed and continue to affect our lives every day. Business organizations small and large are looking to customer transactional and behavioral data to decipher customer preferences, understand trends and project how they will act in the short and medium term.
Artificial Intelligence is revolutionizing digital transformation of knowledge management – Texplicit is an AI tool that uses machine learning and NLP to drastically reduce the time it takes to search for focused content on the internet and intelligently curate and arrange the extracted information in downloadable formats. The Internet of Things has made available a wealth of previously unknown and unused information which increases the range and depth of our data literacy which can be used for organizational benefits
